How to clean your spray gun: A practical guide to keeping your spray gun in top condition

Spray guns play a key role in painting, automotive painting, home improvement and many other areas, and regular cleaning of spray guns not only ensures that they work efficiently and extend their service life, but also ensures the quality of the coating. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide to cleaning your spray gun:
一、 Preparation before cleaning
Material collection
Suitable cleaning solvents: If the gun is to be used for waterborne paints, water or a special waterborne paint cleaner is preferred; if it is to be used for oilborne paints, such as lacquer, you need to prepare organic solvents, such as thinner, acetone, or a special oilborne cleaner for professional spray guns.
Cleaning Tools: Prepare an ample supply of clean rags or paper towels for wiping down all areas of the gun. Several soft-bristle brushes of different sizes, such as a toothbrush, are available for deep cleaning of small parts of the gun.
Protective gear: Wear protective gloves to prevent cleaning solvents from touching your skin, and goggles to protect your eyes from the irritation of solvent splashes.
environmental preparation
Ventilation environment: Be sure to choose a well-ventilated place for cleaning, organic solvents volatile harmful gases or water-based solvents, if the moisture accumulation, will be harmful to human health. Indoor ventilation can be used with the help of exhaust fans, indoor cleaning to avoid crowded areas.
Stay away from ignition sources: If organic solvents are used, due to their flammable properties, make sure that the cleaning site is far away from open flames, electrical switches, sockets and other potential sources of ignition to prevent fire hazards.
二、 Gun disassembly
1.Carefully remove the spray gun from the mating spray equipment, this step should be gentle to avoid impact damage to the gun structure.
2.According to the instruction manual of the spray gun, disassemble the gun's, paint cup or storage tank in order, usually rotate or gently press the clips can be separated.
3.Further remove the nozzle, air cap and other key components, pay attention to keep the disassembled parts to prevent loss or confusion.
三、Gun external cleaning
1.Using a rag or paper towel dipped in cleaning solvent, wipe down the gun's body, cleaning along the grip, trigger, and other parts one by one, to remove paint, dust, and other dirt that adheres to the surface. For more stubborn stains, soak the rag in solvent and wipe a little harder, but be careful not to scratch the gun's delicate exterior.
2.After wiping the gun, focus on cleaning the gun's connecting parts, which are prone to paint residue accumulation, to ensure that the connecting parts are clean and tidy, which will help subsequent assembly and normal use.
四、Gun internal cleaning
1.Flush paint passages: Pour an appropriate amount of cleaning solvent into the paint cup of the gun or connect an external solvent container using the special gun cleaning fitting. Gently trigger the gun to allow the solvent to flow through the paint passages and out the nozzle. Repeat this operation several times until no paint is visible in the sprayed solvent and the passages are thoroughly cleaned of residual paint.
2.Cleaning the nozzle and air cap: The nozzle and air cap are the focus of cleaning as they are critical to spraying performance. Dip a soft-bristle brush into solvent and carefully brush the inside and outside surfaces of the nozzle and air to remove dried paint and fine impurities. If the spray hole is found to be clogged, a fine needle can be used to unclog it carefully, but be sure to keep the needle inserted vertically to avoid damaging the shape of the spray hole and affecting the spray effect.
3.To clean other internal parts such as needle valves, springs, pistons, etc., disassemble these parts depending on the gun configuration, soak them in solvent for a few moments, and then wash them with a brush or rag. When reinstalling, refer strictly to the instructions to ensure that the parts are in place and fit accurately.
五、Post-cleaning inspection and maintenance
1.Check the function of the spray gun: After cleaning and reassembling the spray gun, carry out the function test. Pull the trigger and observe the spray shape, which should be even and symmetrical; check the spray angle, which is in line with the expected use requirements; pay attention to the spray volume, which is normal and stable. If there are problems such as uneven spraying, angular deviation or insufficient quantity, rework and re-clean and adjust in time.
2.Maintaining the Gun: To prevent the gun from rusting, apply a thin layer of rust inhibiting oil to metal surfaces, especially areas susceptible to moisture and rust. For seals, such as O-rings, apply a small amount of lubricant to maintain good sealing performance. Finally, store the gun in a dry, ventilated corner of the room, protected from moisture and dust, until the next use.
